GASEOUS EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS

What is the most effective gas to use in your fire extinguishing system? Is this gas economical? Can we always find this gas? There is no single answer to these questions. The correct answer varies according to the following factors;

  • The form of the application
  • Application area
  • Intended use
  • Distance between gas cylinders and protected area
  • Investment cost
  • Maintenance cost
  • Refilling cost
  • Local availability
  • To be environmentally friendly

For this reason; before the application is made, the selection criteria should be analyzed correctly and the extinguishing gas suitable for the requirements of the area where the application will be made should be preferred.

It is a basic requirement that the gas to be used in the presence of people in the place where the application will be made does not harm people. Gases such as FM-200 (HFC – 227ea), Novec – 1230 (FK 5-1-12), IG-01 (Argon) IG-55 (Argonite) IG-100 (Nitrogen) and IG541 (Inergen) etc. can be used in volumes with people provided that the system design is done correctly.  CO2 gas, on the other hand, is recommended not to be used or to be used conditionally in volumes with people.

Volume protection is essential in gaseous fire extinguishing systems. For this reason, the net volume of the application area is calculated. When calculating the net volume of the space to be protected; the volumes of fixed structures (columns, beams, etc.) in the space are deducted from the volume of the space. In addition, the suspended ceiling and raised floor volumes in the space are added to the net volume. After this point, the preliminary calculations, detail planning, projecting and calculation process are redone according to the current situation, taking into account the basic requirements of the extinguishing system to be designed.

The success of gaseous extinguishing systems depends on achieving the required extinguishing concentration in the area in which they are applied. This means that the sealing of the volume protected by the gas extinguishing system must be of a quality that will keep at least the required gas concentration in the volume for the specified time. When this criterion is not met, the system is not likely to be successful. For this purpose, we need to confirm that the Door-Fan Test provides the extinguishing concentration of the protected space for the time stipulated by the standard, that is, it is sealed. If the required extinguishing concentration cannot be provided for a sufficient period of time in the area you protect with the above-mentioned chemicals or Inert gases without Door-Fan Test, extinguishing will not occur. In this case, architectural improvements should be made in the area. The tests are repeated and the constructional improvements and tests are repeated until the impermeability is ensured for the specified period.

In all gaseous extinguishing systems, Puff Test and Pipe Tightness Tests should be performed as well as Dor-Fan Test.  With the Puff Test, the installation residues remaining in the pipe network are swept with compressed air or Nitrogen gas. After making sure that there are no plumbing residues left in the pipe network, the Puff Test is completed. Pipe Tightness Test is started. For Pipe Tightness Test (LEAK TEST), the nozzle connection points are closed by tightening the blind plug. 3bar pressure is applied to the pipe network. Wait for 10 minutes and at the end of the 10th minute, it is acceptable for the application pressure to drop by a maximum of 20%, that is, the pressure gauge pressure to drop from 3 bar to – 2.4bar. Under these conditions, the pipe network is considered leakproof. If a pressure drop below 2.4bar is observed, the pipe network should be improved.

Local Application can also be done in gaseous fire extinguishing systems. CO2 gas is used for this purpose. Especially when we use CO2 gas for volume extinguishing, there is no Door-Fan Test obligation. However, Puff Test and Pipe Tightness Test are required.
