CO2 GASEOUS EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS

Carbon dioxide, an odorless, colorless and insulating gas at atmospheric pressure, diffuses rapidly into the protected area. Its density is heavier than air and is stored in high-pressure cylinders or low-pressure tanks. It extinguishes by lowering the oxygen level below the combustion limits and by cooling.

When designing CO2 Systems;

  • Design Standard
  • Volume Dimensions
  • Hazard Type
  • Fire Type
  • Maximum and Minimum Temperature
  • Location relative to Sea Level
  • Ventilation Detail
  • Design Concentration
  • Pre-Calculation
  • Final Calculation
  • Net result

proceeding on the basis of the above basic points.

Main features of the CO2 System

  • Powerful Extinguisher
  • Leaves No Waste
  • No Cleaning Problem
  • Not Conductive
  • Not Corrosive
  • Economic
  • Excellent Distribution in the Risk Area
  • Physically extinguishes
  • Can also be used in surface and deep fires
  • Basements require additional ventilation
  • Controlled use in places where people are present
  • Low Refill Cost
  • Can be used for Local Extinguishing
  • Discharge Time 30 – 120 seconds Selectable

The use of the CO2 system in places where people are present is only possible if all of the following conditions are met. Automatic actuation of the system is often not desired in places where people are present.

  • Pneumatic/Electronic Delay
  • Manual Shut-Off Valve
  • Sound and Light Alarm
  • Ventilation
  • Special measures for below-ground areas
  • Measuring the O2 level in the environment before entering
  • Detailed Staff Training

The use of the system can be authorized by meeting the above-mentioned prerequisites.

Areas of Use

CO2 system is an extinguishing system that we use for Total Flooding or Local Application. Especially when it comes to Local Application, it is often not possible to produce a solution other than the use of CO2.

  • UPS Rooms
  • Transformer and Electricity Distribution Centers
  • Valuable Material Warehouses
  • Telecommunication Centers
  • Turbine Cabinets
  • Archives and Museums
  • Flammable and Combustible Material Warehouses
  • Cable and Installation Galleries
  • Printing Machines
  • Powder Coating Units
  • Molding Machines
  • Special Presses and Rolling Mills
  • Painting Units
  • Industrial Cookers
  • Chimneys and Filters etc.
  • Flammable Liquid Pools
  • Paint dipping units
  • Off-Shore Applications
  • Civil, Military and Marine Applications

CO2 gas is normally stored in 75% liquid and 25% gas form. The storage pressure is accepted as 60 bar@20°C on average. Vapor pressure is very high. Depending on the ambient temperature, the pressure increases as the temperature increases. Therefore, manometer cannot be used. It requires a “Weighing Mechanism” or the cylinders must be weighed by separating them from the system at least once a year depending on the environment during maintenance. Low Pressure Switch cannot be used. Requires special precautions in places where people are present.

CO2 Systems can consist of single or multiple cylinders. Cylinders 13.4l. – 26.8l. – 40.2 – 67l and 80l. are available with capacity options. In case of large capacities over a single system, protection can be made with low pressure container systems. CO2 systems are produced in line with market demands with UL, FM and VdS approved system options.

CO2 systems are often designed using one of NFPA 12, BS 5036, VdS 2093 or CEA 4007 Standards. Protection of multiple zones from a single system can be achieved using selector valves. For this we recommend that the main system should be 100% redundant.

“Puff Test” and ‘Leak Test’ must be applied to the pipe network of the areas protected by CO2 Extinguishing Systems.

The system is used together with the control panel and accessories. The detection side of the extinguishing system can be handled by using different detectors according to the requirements of the area to be protected.
