WATER AND FOAM MONITORS

Water and Foam monitors (Water and Foam Cannons) are field elements used to deliver the required and correct amount of water or foam to the risky or risk-affected area as soon as possible, from a safe distance.

In order to provide the flow rate required by the area, it is necessary to establish the pressure and flow relationship correctly and adapt this situation to the area to be protected.  The nozzle and monitor to be used in the field must be selected correctly. Fixed monitors are the most preferred and can be supplied relatively economically. Self-oscillating or remote controlled monitors (water or foam cannons) can be preferred according to the risk requirements of the area.

Monitor nozzles can be defined as three types: direct solid-jet, aspirated, which adds air to the solution in the barrel, and non-aspirated fog/jet. Direct solid-jet nozzles are designed to use water from monitors. They are rarely preferred today.

Fog/jet and non-aspirated nozzles have longer throw distances than aspirated nozzles for equivalent flow and pressure. It is especially preferred in areas where combined water and foam use is in question. Aspirating nozzles are preferred when direct foam use is required. In aspirating nozzles, the solution and air meet in the monitor barrel and the finished foam (expanded foam) is ejected from the barrel. Shooting distances are relatively shorter. The most important reason why non-aspirating fog/jet nozzles are preferred in industrial fields is that the firing distance is about 10% longer than aspirating nozzles. It is recommended to use film-forming foams with non-aspirating Fog/Jet nozzles.

The performance of the monitor to be used can be measured according to capacity and effective throw distance. Generally, monitors that can use water and foam are selected according to your area of use for flow rates of 1.000 – 50.000 l/min. at a throw range of 30 – 120m. Although these values vary according to manufacturers, water and foam monitors operating in the range of 1,000 – 12,500 l/min. are often used in industrial sites. Water and foam cannons with high capacities are selected for special cases.

Depending on the intended use and hazard group, the nozzle type of the monitor is determined. Nozzles used in monitors can be supplied as direct jet nozzles or fog/jet nozzles. Nowadays, monitors are often selected to include fog/jet nozzles as they provide better firing range. If the selected Fog/Jet nozzles have the ability to calibrate the flow rate on the barrel of the nozzle, the installation will be extremely flexible and effective.

Monitors can be grouped as water or water and foam, portable or fixed type.

Mobile Monitors

  • Manual Operated Monitors
  • Self Oscillating Monitors

Fixed Monitors

  • Manual Operated Monitors
  • Self Oscillating Monitors
  • Hydraulically Operated Monitors
  • Electrically Operated Monitors

The use and location of the monitor is the most important criteria determining how the monitor should be controlled. Depending on your requirements, versatile water and foam monitors can be used to suppress fires in a wide variety of high-risk areas.
