What is HI- EX High Expansion Foam Extinguishing System?
High expansion foam concentrate, using special foam concentrate and foam generators, creates large foam bubbles by expanding the water and foam mixture at a ratio of approximately 1/200 to 1/1000 depending on the type of generators used. The generators used in the Hi-Ex System often do not require an external energy source. They utilize the existing pump pressure to send the water and foam mixture to the impingement surface of the generator through special nozzles, mix it with air, and enable the solution to expand within the range of 1/200 to 1/1000.
Hi-Ex Foam Generators are often made of stainless steel, making them extremely lightweight. They can be installed without requiring specific construction based on their ceiling position. However, as some manufacturers equip Hi-Ex Foam Extinguishing System Generators with electric or hydraulic motors, the installation must be carried out with extreme care and additional fastening procedures.
Hi-Ex foam extinguishing system generators obtain the air required for foam production either from outside or from the environment in which they are located. Using indoor air is extremely important, as it traps heat, smoke, and other harmful factors produced by combustion within the foam. This principle of using ambient air is highly significant for effective extinguishing. By utilizing the heated indoor air, it captures the heat and oxygen necessary for the continuation of combustion within the foam. This reduces the oxygen levels and temperature in the environment. As a result, additional ventilation or smoke extraction may relatively not be required, contributing to the structural integrity of the building.
When the Hi-Ex system is used, heat and oxygen are absorbed from the environment, eliminating two critical factors for combustion. This allows the system to quickly control the fire. Due to the water content within its structure, it provides a cooling effect. By covering the material, it isolates it from the environment and ensures safe fire suppression. Additionally, with its minimal water content, the damage caused by water flooding is negligible compared to conventional foam systems.
Why are Hi-Ex High Expansion Foam Extinguishing Systems preffered?
- The expanding foam traps heat from the environment
- The expanding foam traps oxygen from the environment
- Provides cooling due to its water content
- Covers the risk and prevents the continuation of combustion
- Quickly controls flames and heat
- Reduces environmental tension
- Generators can be flexibly positioned in the area
- Enables flexible installation in large areas
- Requires relatively low water consumption
- Requires relatively low pump capacity
- Requires low fire water reserves
- Ensures low piping costs and on-site installation
- Requires minimal maintenance
- May not require additional smoke and heat extraction
- Does not require additional air ducts or wall openings when using indoor air
- Preserves the structural integrity of the area it is installed
- Simplified positioning and easy installation
- Environmentally friendly
As stated above, Hi-Ex Foam Extinguishing Systems are frequently preferred because they independently fulfill essential fire suppression requirements, such as controlling the fire, rapidly extinguishing it, suppressing vapors, and reducing heat and oxygen levels.

Using high-quality and certified materials alone is not sufficient. Combining the application in the area to be protected by the High Expansion Foam System with proper engineering services results in an extinguishing system that is highly effective in B-class flammable liquid fires as well as A-class fires, offering alternative solutions. A High Expansion Foam Extinguishing System, installed in your facility with accurate engineering and application knowledge, ensures maximum protection. Hi-Ex Foam Extinguishing Systems are designed for extinguishing purposes.
Standard type foam concentrates with usage ratios of 2%, 2.5%, 2.75%, or 3%, or foam concentrates effective in alcohol and solvent fires, are used for Hi-Ex Foam Extinguishing Systems. The solution expansion ratio of the foam generator and the expansion ratio of the foam concentrate should be checked. Depending on the situation, additional foam generators may need to be added to the system or the foam concentrate may need to be increased. They are often used in conjunction with bladder tank proportioning systems.
