Wet Pipe Sprinkler System

In a wet pipe sprinkler system, the pipes are continuously filled with pressurized water. It is only applied in places where there is no risk of freezing and the ambient temperature does not exceed 95 °C. It is the most widely used sprinkler system.

In buildings used for purposes such as shopping malls, car parks, accommodation, education, health care, trade, storage, production, and all high-rise buildings, including residences,Wet Pipe systems containing the appropriate type of sprinkler heads are used depending on the characteristics of the spaces.

In areas with special hazards, “Foam Wet Pipe Sprinkler System” is designed and used with foam concentrate additive.

Wet pipe sprinkler system sections located in areas where there is a risk of freezing should be protected with antifreeze additive or electrically monitored heater cable system.

Wet pipe sprinkler systems can be divided into zones fed from a common column. Wet Pipe Sprinkler System Zone size should be maximum 4831 m² for low and medium hazard class and maximum 3716 m² in case of hydraulic calculation for high hazard class. If the pipe table method is used for high hazard class spaces, the zone area should be maximum 2323 m².

Depending on the fire hazard class of the facility and structure, the maximum floor area on any floor protected by sprinklers connected to a single system column or combined system column of the sprinkler system should not exceed the values specified in the table below.

Hazard Class Maximum Zone Area (m²)
Low Hazard (LH) 4831
Medium Hazard (MH) 4831
High Hazard (HH) 3716 (Hydraulic Calculation Method)
2323 (Pipe Table Method)

In high storage areas, the maximum floor area on each floor or protection zone connected to any supply column should not exceed 3716 m². Where a sprinkler zone addresses more than one floor or separate use zone, a butterfly valve, flow switch and test and drain valve should be installed at the entrance to the floors or zones.

In high-rise buildings, it should be ensured that the maximum static pressure remains within the limit values of the sprinkler system equipment. In zoned sprinkler installations, the necessary devices to monitor the open or closed status of the valves and the zone water flow status should be equipped and connected to a control and display panel located in an accessible location in the facility. Fire and fault signals must be continuously monitored. Loop and grid piping systems can only be used in wet pipe sprinkler systems.

Wet Pipe Sprinkler System sections protected with antifreeze liquid must be designed in accordance with the following rules:

  1. The number of sprinklers in each wet sprinkler pipe section protected by antifreeze liquid shall not exceed 20.
  2. If more than two antifreeze compartments are controlled by one control valve set, the total number of sprinklers in the antifreeze compartments cannot exceed 100.
  3. The freezing point of the antifreeze liquid must be below the minimum temperature expected at the location. The specific gravity of the prepared solution should be checked with a suitable hydrometer.
  4. In systems where antifreeze liquid is used, water pollution prevention and backflow prevention devices should be used.
  5. ESFR sprinklers cannot be used in systems with antifreeze. In systems where ESFR sprinklers are used, if the sprinkler head is listed with Antifreeze (Propylene Glycol), it is allowed to use.
